Lira da braccio – Player

around 1515 | Venezianisch

This close-up, half-length portrait of a musician is an early example of the genre of the Musician, subsequently very popular. The young man’s urgent look turned towards the viewer seems to insist that the latter listen more than look. Although the portrait has not yet been clearly attributed to a particular painter, the young man’s physiognomy, the rather thickly applied paint as well as the cheerful colour tones used point towards Palma Vecchio.
