Skating on the Moat in Brussels

Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, the stadholder (provincial executive officer) of the Southern Netherlands, is observing from his coach at the right edge of the painting the diverse activities on the ice. A note made in the inventory of his collection in 1659 mentions that this was the frozen city moat of Brussels. Jan van den Hoecke, a half-brother of Robert, was court painter to Leopold Wilhelm.
