Popinjay Shooting in Brussels

It was one of the duties of the court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm to document official events. Here Teniers depicts the end of a popinjay shooting match as part of an old festive occasionin Brussels, the procession in honour of Our Lady of Le Sablon. According to custom, the ruler had to shoot down the jay affixed to a pole that had been used during the guild’s match. Afterwards the archduke was congratulated by the officers of the marksmen’s guild and the mayor.
