Archduke Leopold Wilhelm

around 1650/56 | Peter Thys

Leopold Wilhelm (1614–1662), youngest son of Emperor Ferdinand II, was destined to take holy orders and received an education that suited his preference for art and literature. The years 1647 to 1656 during which he administered the Southern Netherlands as Spanish Governor proved especially productive for his collecting activities. His acquisition of around 1,400 pictures, amongst which numerous paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, laid the foundationstone of the Vienna Gallery.
