Phoenix

ca. 1610/20 | Furienmeister

The figure of a bird interpreted as a phoenix demonstrates the tension between nature and art characteristic of princely Kunstkammern and treasuries. The master transformed the smooth elephant tusk into bushy plumage, and otherwise contrasts the conventional emphasis on the silken, lustrous surface of ivory with the virtuosic differentiation of materials.
