Lidded Cup
dated 1616 | Georg Burrer
Ivory is an ideal material for producing turned vessels. On turning lathes, cups and other artworks were created with complicated geometric and asymmetrical forms, designed to astonish the viewer. In the 17th century, many princes themselves tried this technique, which sought to overcome nature through applied mathematics and mechanics, transforming it into art.
