Noli me tangere
ca. 1525/30 | Benvenuto Tisi, gen. Il Garofalo
When Mary Magdalene went to Christ’s tomb in the early morning hours, the risen Christ appeared to her. She first supposed him to be the gardener. Christ then made himself known to her but turned her away with the words: “Noli me tangere” (“Touch me not”). He told her to go to his disciples and announce his resurrection. In a manner typical of Ferrarese painting, this scene is set in a highly detailed landscape, which is particularly charming in the way it evokes the mood of an early spring morning.
