The Resurrection of Christ

Clad in a radiant white robe, the elegant figure of Christ dominates the scene. The surrounding soldiers and other witnesses respond to the Resurrection in diverse ways, the very multiplicity of their reactions is underscored by the lively colours of their garments. As is typical of this period of Garofalo‘s career, the painting blends a Raffaelesque composition with the Venetian colour palette in a masterly way. The signed and dated altar painting was made in 1520 for the Ferraran nobleman and protonotary apostolic Girolamo Sacrati, who had the church of Bondeno renovated and newly furnished.
