The Inn at the Edge of the Dunes

around 1649 | Gerrit van Hees

The monumentality of the landscape points to artists of the Haarlem school, such as Isack van Ostade, to whom the picture was long attributed. According to the latest scholarship, however, Gerrit van Hees, an artist from the circle surrounding Ruisdael, was the author. The picture reflects van Hees’s intensive analysis of Ostade’s way of portraying figures, which he may have done by studying the latter’s preserved sketches.
