The Village Barber

about 1637 | Adriaen van Ostade

This early work, which was influenced by Adriaen Brouwer, is one of a series of depictions of simply peasant life. Scenes of physical violence and unbridled emotion, the depiction of pain and the malicious pleasure of the viewers characterize this group of paintings. With their delicate, cool coloration, the figures stand out against the grey-brown background. The light and dark of the space is based on the painting of Rembrandt.
