Mary with Child and Saints Rosa (?) and Catharine (?)

around 1493/1495 | Pietro Vannucci, gen. Perugino

„PETRUS PERUSINUS PINXIT” reads the signature placed bottom left in this half-length composition. Perugino’s handling of oil paint is truly impressive. The delicate paint layers and transitions in the female saints’ skin and their silken tresses held up in golden nets emphasize the gentle charming mood. A similar composition in which the Virgin Mary is flanked by John the Baptist and St Catherine is now in the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
