Landscape with Ford

Around 1660 the Amsterdam landscape painter Meindert Hobbema was in the workshop of Jacob van Ruisdael; he is soften regarded as his teacher’s most important pupil. Landscape with Ford documents their stylistic affinity. A brook, crossed by a sandy path, runs along the edge of a forest. A herder is shepherding his animals across the ford. Both the play of light and shadows and the dead birch tree in the foreground are clearly informed by Ruidsdeal’s compositions.
