Mountain Landscape with Robber’s Attack and Furnace

Lucas I. van Valckenborch had a fondness for the depiction of mountainous scenery with iron-works. This version shows that he also knew how to fill large-format spaces with real substance. It has not yet proven possible to identify the region depicted here, nor the other landscapes with blast furnaces. The exact reproduction of details does, however, allow us to conclude that Valckenborch had studied iron-smelting at close hand.
