Summer Landscape (July or August)

As court painter to Archduke Matthias in Linz, Valckenborch created a cycle of twelve depictions of the occupations of the months, seven of which have been preserved. The cycle is part of an Early Netherlandish tradition that connects the months with the activities that are characteristic of them and places these scenes in a plausible landscape. In a variation on the models provided by Bruegel, Valckenborch blends together the allegory of the months, the landscape and the figural scene to create unity.
