Spring Landscape (May)

As the month of love, May makes the landscape a setting for amorous scenes. In the 16th century a labyrinth of hedges with a “tempietto d’amore” (on the left) was a popular garden feature. Its shape is repeated in the circular fountain, which is decorated with suggestive figures (a naked goddess and Satyrs). In the background can be seen the archducal palace, the bell tower and St. Gudula in Brussels, all set in a fantasy land-scape. A tournament is taking place on the square in front of the palace.
