King Louis XVI (1754−1793) of France in his Coronation Robes

The king is wearing the coronation robes and the Order of the Holy Spirit. The insignia of power along with the magnificent setting underscore the formal character of the painting. The Vienna version is based on Callet’s first portraits of Louis XVI, which are in Versailles. In the course of the French Revolution, the king and his wife were condemned to death and executed in Paris.
