Jan van Montfort (died 1649), Councillor and General Mint Master at the Brussels Court, is shown here with looks and gestures that are solid and extrovert at the same time. His dark “stately robes” with ruff, gold chain, gloves, sword and key befit his courtly function, rather than his actual profession of medallion maker. The tired eyes and dishevelled hair are in marked contrast to Montfort’s self-confidence. This subtle tone of ambivalence is characteristic of van Dyck’s depictions of people.
