Marques Francisco de Moncada

1633/1634 | Anthonis van Dyck

Francisco de Moncada, Marquis of Aytona and Count of Osuna, was sent in 1629 by the Spanish Court as emissary to Brussels, where the Infanta Clara Isabella resided as Governor of the Southern Netherlands. In 1633 he received the high command of the Spanish Army there, and upon the death of the Infanta took over the government for a short period of time, too. Van Dyck shows him in Spanish courtly robes with the Order of Santiago, the collar of which with the medallion of St. James he proudly grips.
