Portrait of a Woman

During his stay in Flanders lasting several months in 1634, van Dyck painted amongst others this portrait of a self-confident Flemish bourgeois woman. She is captured in atmospheric, natural scenery, similar to those portraits of Filippo Francesco and Carlo Emmanuele d’Este, and Nicholas Lanier. Typical of the late van Dyck is the elegiac undertone.
