Expulsion from Paradise

around 1580/1590 | Hans Hoffmann

Hoffmann worked for Emperor Rudolf II, and this Biblical subject bears witness to his familiarity with the artistic taste prevalent at the imperial court. His focus is on verisimilitude, and he combines landscape elements from both north and south of the Alps to create a new coherent composition. Flora and fauna as well as the composition itself reference the works of Albrecht Dürer, but the group in the foreground is clearly modelled on one in a painting by the Italian artist Girolamo Siciolante.
