Emperor Maximilian II and his Wife Maria
ca. 1600 (?) | Severin Brachmann
The relief shows Maximilian and his Spanish wife in an open gallery. The garden beyond is filled with animals, including such exotic ones as an elephant and a dromedary. Maximilian was deeply interested in nature: He was in contact with scientists, collected rare plants and animals, and laid out gardens and installed menageries at his summer residences.
