The emperor’s portrait is based on a chalk drawing made by Albrecht Dürer during the Augsburg Diet in 1518. That study served as a model for woodcuts and several paintings, some of them executed only after Maximilian’s death. It was of major importance in shaping the emperor’s image for the following generations.
