Cup with Two Handles
13th or early 14th c.
To the medieval mind, vessels of precious stones had a value and significance far beyond their prestige or beauty. Equally important were healing and other powers that such stones were believed to possess as well as their allegorical interpretation in the light of Christian doctrine. Rock crystal, for example, symbolized purity and strength of faith, while agate was considered an effective antidote to poison.
