Christ, shown from the back, is pulled heavenwards by the hand of God through an opening in the clouds. Standing below, Mary and the apostles express their astonishment in carefully differentiated expressive gestures. Both the elegant acanthus frieze that frames the panel and parts of the composition are informed by Byzantine prototypes. The precious relief once formed part of the cover of a liturgical book.
