Communion Chalice with Paten and Straw, so-called Chalice from St. Peter

ca. 1160/80

Both the shape of this wide chalice with two handles and the complex symbolism of the decoration are characteristic of Romanesque art. Images and inscriptions are conflated to create a compendium of the history of salvation, explaining the meaning and content of the Eucharist. The faithful used the “straw” to partake of the consecrated wine.
