Count Philipp Ludwig Wenzel Sinzendorf

Count Sinzendorf (1671–1742), a diplomat in imperial service and from 1705 court chancellor, had taken part in the Congress of Soissons in 1728, where negotiations were conducted on the future of the Ostend Company, the trading company of the Austrian Netherlands. At that time his portrait was painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud, the creator of the French court portrait at the time of King Louis XIV, who depicted Sinzendorf in the vestments of a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The majestic posture and the splendour of the fabrics enhance the importance of the portrait’s subject.
