Book of the Dead for Pai-nefer-nefer

21st Dynasty, 1081–931 BC

This funerary papyrus of the scribe of the treasury Pai-nefer-nefer contains the vignette – scene and text – of the most important chapters in the Book of the Dead: the corpse upon a bier is mummified by Anubis. In the “negative confession” the deceased lists all the sins he did not commit before 42 judges, and his heart is weighed before Osiris and the “Devourer”, a monster combining the bodies of a lion and a hippopotamus with the head of a crocodile.
