Benedetto Varchi
around 1540 | Tiziano Vecellio, gen. Tizian
As a famous Florentine historian and humanist, Benedetto Varchi (1503–1565) had been an outstanding influence on the Tuscan language and Florentine history, as well as publishing works of art theory. A stay in Venice (1536/40) probably gave rise to this portrait. The reserved yet grandiose setting with the reduced scenery suggestive of a noble ambiance, and the elegant posture of the subject, make this portrait a model for aristocratic portrait painting of the centuries to follow.
