St. Jerome
1502 | Lucas der Ältere Cranach
One of the most popular themes in painting around 1500 was St. Jerome as a hermit in the wilderness. The saint is kneeling in repentance before the crucified Christ and is accompanied only by a lion from whose paw, according to legend, he had removed a thorn. Cranach set this scene under a group of bizarrely shaped trees.
