Portrait of a Man

Lucas Cranach the Younger took over the large workshop of his father, which continued to paint largely in the same style. However, the colouration in the son’s pictures is brighter and the compositions are a bit more planar. Linear expressive devices, such as the sharp contrast between the outlines and the background, have great visual importance. This is the companion piece to “Portrait of a Noblewoman” (Inv. No. GG 886).
