Kurz nach seinem Regierungsantritt führte Kaiser Franz Joseph 1849 für alle Staatsbeamten Uniformen nach militärischem Muster ein. Die Minister aller Ressorts trugen nun einheitliche Waffenröcke aus dunkelgrünem Tuch. Die rote Samtauflage an Kragen und Manschetten und die reiche Goldstickerei wiesen die Träger als Minister aus; das Ressort, dem sie vorstanden, konnte aus der Uniform jedoch nicht abgelesen werden.
