View of Ostende

Mid-17th century | Robert van den Hoecke

Here Robert van den Hoecke has concerned himself with a form of panoramic landscape created by such Dutch painters as Hendrick Goltzius, Hercules Seghers and Jan van Goyen. The smooth horizon of a flat landscape is accented by the silhouette of Ostende, while the dune in the left foreground and the diagonal path of the strollers create remarkable counterpoint.
