King Ferdinand of Bohemia and Hungary

1634/35 | Jan van den Hoecke

Ferdinand III (1608–1657), born in Graz as the son of Emperor Ferdinand II, scored his first success as commander of the imperial forces at the Battle of Nördlingen in 1634 during the Thirty Years’ War. The picture was painted to mark the occasion of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand’s triumphal entry into Antwerp as the new governor in 1635. It originally decorated the front of the Ferdinand Arch (cf. Inv. No. 699). The paintings were executed by Jan van den Hoecke after a design by Rubens.
