The Wheel Miracle of St. Catherine

before 1515 | Joachim Patinier

According to legend, St. Catharine of Alexandria was executed by in 307 A.D. after she had converted pagan philosophers to Christianity in the course of a dispute. Catharine is one of 14 helpers in times of need, patron saint of theologians and philosophers as well as of the University of Paris. One frequent depiction is the destruction by divine intervention of the torture instrument, the wheel, as here in the centre of the picture. The high perspective point chosen by the artist is characteristic of Patinier’s small-figured early works, revealing the influence of Hieronymus Bosch’s landscapes.
