The Cook

A nephew and pupil of Pieter Aertsen, Bueckelaer restricted himself in this masterpiece of Mannerism to a few impressive motifs: the eye-catcher is a spit held at a slight angle with two capons ready to be roasted. The young, self-assured cook appears to be pointing out the culinary enjoyment latent in their heavy bodies. By way of contrast, the other objects appear remarkably unsteady.
