Large Fish Market

about 1654/1655 | Joachim von Sandrart

The composition is informed by a creative idea that was developed to a large extent by Rubens in cooperation with Snyders. Sandrart adopts the opulent depiction of fish, crabs, mussels and oysters, and, in this case as well, living seals can be seen in the foreground beneath the table. This suggests that the scene is intended less as a realistic depiction of a market than as a manifestation of the great abundance of sea food.
