African elephants were still found in Upper Egypt during the Old Kingdom, but there­ after only in Nubia. By the beginning of the New Kingdom they had probably been driv­ en further south. There are representations, however, that show elephants were brought to Egypt from Syria. Hunting elephants was a royal prerogative.
