Portrait of a Gentleman in Spanish Costume

The inscription to the upper right bears the year the painting was created as well as the age of the unknown subject (41 years). Born of an Antwerp family of painters, Key specialised in portraits of the Netherlandish nobility and bourgeoisie. He thus follows in the style of painting initiated by Anthonis Mor, in which realism is fused with an austere sense of form.
