In his large-format, resplendent still lifes, Jan Fyt lifts the genre that from the outset found its models in the surroundings of the market and the kitchen, into the sphere of the courtly. Palatial architecture and park landscape, musical instruments, a peacock and valuable vases all set the tone of the picture. The figure of the youth possibly derives from Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert.
