Mercury Teaching Cupid (Fragment)

Pier Jacopo Alari de Bonacolsi signed his perfect imitations of classical sculptures “Antico.” He was the first to develop an ingenious technique for the serial production of small bronzes as objets d’art. Another sculptor active in Upper Italy signed his plaquettes with the pseudonym “Moderno”. He combined classical motifs with Christian subjects, in order to “modernize” them for contemporary taste.
