The Flagellation of Christ

In the final years of his life, Tintoretto mostly painted nocturnal works full of mystic atmosphere. Plasticity, sculptured volume and “realistic” coloration give way to an unreal light and dark. Only the figures glow like spectres, suggested with a few generous brushstrokes and imbued with ghostly, flickering colour – more a depiction of a vision than tangible reality.
