Lidded Tankard
1st third 17th c. (mounting)
The beauty and value of vessels made from rare and precious stones was so highly prized in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that works from antiquity and the Byzantine period were adapted and given new mountings more than a thousand years later. Occasionally, pieces of different origin would be combined to create a new vessel, or gold mountings would be fitted so as to conceal previous damage.
