Lidded Tankard

In the Middle Ages, Constantinople, Palermo, Venice, Paris and Prague were centres for the production of costly vessels made from precious stones. From there they found their way to the courts of secular and ecclesiastical princes. Origin and date of individual pieces are very difficult to determine as unequivocal sources are rare, while their formal language and decoration are seldom directly comparable to those of metal or ceramic works.
