Lidded Cup of Emperor Frederick III

The arms and inscriptions on this lidded beaker refer to Emperor Frederick III. Angels present his device, “aeiov,” with the metal foils above them offering one of its many suggested interpretations: “aquila eius iuste omnia vincet” (“his eagle will rightly triumph over everything”). The emperor is said to have received the beaker in 1473 as a gift from Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy
