Hercules, Nessus and Deianira

1602–1607 | Hubert Gerhard

Hubert Gerhard (ca. 1545/50–1620) The Flemish sculptor was one of the pioneers of Italian formal language north of the Alps. His training in the Florentine style is reflected in the pronounced rotation of his elegant figures. He worked for the Fugger family in Augsburg and as court sculptor in Munich and Innsbruck; Emperor Rudolf II, however, tried in vain to tie him to his court. The composition of Gerhard’s small bronzes is completely in keeping with the taste of the time.
