In contrast to Florence, portrait sculpture in Venice developed hesitantly, as any cult of personality was long taboo. Funerary monuments were the only exceptions. This portrait head of Marc Antonio della Torre perhaps comes from such a context. Small, idealized bronze busts in an antique style, on the other hand, were produced in Upper Italy as collectibles.
