Viola da gamba (viol)

2nd half of the 16th century | Antonio Ciciliano

The alto viol SAM 70 belongs to the viol consort by Antonio Ciciliano that was kept in the collection of the art loving and music supporting Obizzi family in Catajo Castle near Padua. There, among other ventures, a theatre with sixteen boxes and two galleries was built, and we can assume that the gambe of Ciciliano originated from this period. Dendrochronological analyses of the bellies of their instruments show that the belly of this instrument dates from short after 1387. (rh/bd)
