Forest Scene with Water
around 1645 | Aert van der Neer
This painting already heralds the development of Dutch landscape art around the middle of the century that was to reach a summit in Jacob van Ruisdael’s ”The Great Forest” (Inv. No. GG 426). In contrast to the fluent pictures that were painted in the preceding decades emphasising the atmospheric aspects, his compositions have more structure. Instead of diagonals he uses a stabilising framework of horizontal and vertical pictorial elements, and his coloration is also stronger.
