Christoph Columbus mit Wappenfahne

16. Jahrhundert | anonym

Christoph Columbus (1451–1506) marked the start of the age of discoveries. On instruction of the Spanish King Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile he tried to find a new seaway to India and discovered Cuba and Haiti. His third journey led him to the coast of South America, his fourth to Central America. This painting belongs to a series of portraits shown in this room and demonstrates that the discoverer was as famous as the bravest heroes. Another portrait of Columbus was in Archduke Ferdinand’s II famous collection of about thousand small format portraits. The painting was part of the decoration of the so-called Neuer Saal in Ruhelust palace/ Innsbruck (s. inventory of estate, 1596).
