Carnival in Rome

about 1650/51 | Johannes Lingelbach

Johannes Lingelbach was one of the late proponents of the “Bamboccianti”, Dutch painters working in Rome who depicted the everyday life of the Italian people. This scene takes place in Rome’s Piazza Colonna, which has been changed to make it appear like a natural stage. In the foreground the classic figures of commedia dell’arte can be seen in the crowd around the actors’ float: the Dottore with his slouch hat, Pulcinella and Arlecchino on horseback, and Columbina dressed completely in white.
